Step 1:
Pre-Tanning
·
Soaking- Here leather is soaked to remove salt,
used in preserving leather.
·
Liming - Hair, and epidermis are removed and a the solution of leather processing chemicals,
like lime and sodium sulfide, is applied to make the hide turn into soft.
·
Splitting- Now hide is split into layers; the
top layer is used for producing smooth grain leather & bottom is used for
suede.
Step 2: Tanning
In this process, the pre-tanned hide is converted into
leather, wherein mineral tanning is done with alkaline chrome-3 salts. However,
the other tanning methods are:

Pure Vegetable Tanning

Synthetic Tanning

Oil Tanning
·
Combination Tanning
Step 3: Selecting
Once tanning is done excess water is removed, and the hides
are then graded according to the quantity and locations of natural features and
flaws.
Step 4: Dressing
This process requires the following steps:

Shaving- Hides get a uniform thickness.
·
Dyeing – To add colors, dyes are used.
·
Re-tanning – Some additional leather
tanning chemicals are added to make the leather fit the need.
·
Setting – Here creases & excess water is
removed
·
Drying – Now hides are stretched dried on large
frames or vacuum dried.
·
Trimming- Removing of rough and ragged edges are
removed.
Step 5: Finishing
